We’ve been hesitant to start a blog up to this point in our lives. Even in setting up this blog, there’s something about the activity that seems a bit narcissistic. It’s all about us. At least it feels that way right now.
Actually, our hope is that this blog won’t just be the self-obsessed ramblings of two people who think that the world revolves around them. We’ve created this blog with a few basic purposes in mind. First, we’re hoping to use the blog as a convenient way to stay in touch with the people we know in the United States. Hopefully this blog will simplify things, so that we aren’t constantly writing the same general things over and over in individual emails to family members and friends.
Second, we think this blog will be a useful medium for portraying what our life is like in Cambridge. We’ll post pictures, tell stories about differences between the United Kingdom and the United States, and try to describe enough of our daily experiences to give our readers a feel for what it is like to live as an American in England. If there’s a particular facet of life in the UK that you’d like us to address, just let us know, and we’ll try to write about it.
Finally, we’re starting a blog because we think it will be a helpful way for us to process the lessons we’re learning through our experiences abroad. By writing about the things that we’re experiencing, hopefully we’ll learn some lessons and grow up a bit along the way. We’ll try to be honest, candid, and thoughtful, and we look forward to interacting through this site.
We chose the title United We Stand for a few reasons. We come from the United States. We’re living in the United Kingdom. We feel united as a couple in this new adventure…The title plays upon our American heritage. It’s drawn from biblical language, and it’s an ideal to which we personally strive in our marriage.
